The 7 Best Tips for Storing a Lawn Mower Over the Winter

Posted on: August 23, 2018 | Tri-Village Self Storage 2018-08-23

It’s time to start thinking about storing your lawn mower for the winter. Before you can store your lawn mower, it is important that you prepare it for the off-season.

How to Store a Lawn Mower

  1. How to Use Fuel Stabilizer in Lawn Mower:
Unused gas left in your lawn mower can clog up the carburetor and form rust. Add the fuel stabilizer into the gas tank and run the mower to distribute the gas all throughout the system. Turn the lawn mower off and allow it to cool. Once cooled, siphon the excess gas out of the lawn mower.
  2. Remove the Battery:
Disconnect the battery and clean it off with a cloth and metal brush. Always be cautious to store your battery away from gas cans, the water heater, furnace and anything else that may be combustible.
  3. Disconnect the Spark Plug and Remove the Blade:
This step is extremely important and will prevent the lawn mower from starting up and injuring you. Once the spark plug has been disconnected, remove the lawn mower blade. This step can be done unscrewing the bolts that hold the blade in place. To avoid injury, always wear gloves when handling the blade. Removing the blade will allow you to change the oil and clean the underside of the lawn mower much easier.
  4. Change the Oil:
Now that the blade has been removed, change the oil in the lawn mower. During the off-season the lawn mower can get debris and dirt caught inside, preventing the oil from working properly. An oil change before storage will help prevent problems from occurring later on.
  5. Clean the Underside of the Lawn Mower:
It is much easier to access the underside of the lawn mower with the blade being removed. Use a wire brush to clear out any grass or caked on mud that may be clogging the inside of your lawn mower. Once this step has been completed, reattach the blade.
  6. Replace the Air Filter:
In order to keep your lawn mower running as efficiently as possible, it is important to change the air filter. If the air filter is made of paper, replace it with a new one.
  7. Where to Store a Lawn Mower: Choose a Smart Storage Location:
Now that you have spent all of this time preparing your lawn mower for storage, it is important to choose a location that will protect your lawn mower during the off-season. Garages and sheds are prone to dangerous fluctuations in temperature which can damage your lawn mower over time. Instead, consider a climate controlled storage unit rental. A climate controlled storage unit rental will maintain a steady temperature ideal for storing sensitive lawn equipment.
